In 1983, the Westmoreland County Board of Commissioners established a non-profit corporation known as the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corporation (WCIDC) to promote economic development in the county. Although the main focus of the WCIDC is the development of industrial parks, the WCIDC is also committed to supporting economic development in the county through its involvement in a number of business assistance programs, transportation projects, special projects (i.e. Sony), and the redevelopment of abandoned industrial sites. The WCIDC has become the keystone among all other economic development in the county. The WCIDC's industrial park system consists of fourteen fully developed, strategically located industrial parks.
